Thinking of Resign

My resign feeling come out again. Quite a number of reason to make up my mind.

1) 24 hours on call - This kind of job is really bad. I remember last time Ow says his fren working in HSBC also in this situation, but the pay is quite high. For me, I rather 9 - 6 working hours, sometime OT, but not 24 hours on call.

2) Travle From Ampang to Shah Alam - This reason I mention earlier. I want to stop using my car so often.

Reason not to:

1) Freedom - Not much company can have this kind of freedom. I can come in 10am, as long as my work is done on time.

2) MiSell - Hai~!!! If you are not here, I might have resigned. It is not easy to get a good partner.

Since I am the local Ampang boy, I in the standby list for the next week during Chinese New Year. Anything happen to the server, such as server down, web application fail to open, ..., I will be called.

Well, I have a bad feeling over next week ~!!!

huh? you is programmer but need maintain the server running ?

posted by lekboon | 16/02/2007 13:12:57

Server down not my problem lah, but normally server down sure coz by application, application high load or didn't close connection properly which make the server down.

So, server down = ask programmer to find out & fix the problem; = ask system admin to restart the server.

oic,can use the remote desktop to work at ur home one is it?so u no need go to ur office to fix problem lo.

posted by lekboon | 16/02/2007 13:25:27

The problem is no, system admin can use vpn to access the network to restart server, but programmer has no vpn access, cannot work from home.

Resign is it a point yo solve your problem? This is the challenge where yo uhave to take up in order to build up some valuable skills for your career progression in future. This is just some peanuts and where as in future you might face more trouble and challenges than what you are facing now. It is best for you to learn now than to suffer later. This is not likely being your last job for sure. Therefore I do hope that you build up some valuable skills and some meaningful communications skills for your future job progression. I am very glad that you point out having a good partner as a reason for you to not resign. This really mean team work is there in yourself. This is something that you must treasure for all teh hardworks. Lastly, decision is still in your hand. Its not whether how much you give out to the company and how much you got it back. Its about what you build now and teh use of it for your future. Good luck.

Thanks for the word.

I just want to point out that I really hate 24 hours on call job, I think nobody will like that kind of job.

Yeah, you are right, I think I haven't master all the skills here. I should put this into "Not to Resign" list .

You are most welcome.

Remember one thing, what you've been through today will be the base for you to build up your future.

Yes no one will love 24hours on call job. But take it as a change of what you've gain in the company. Thinking back its worth to gain.

Good luck again.

24 hours on call?

Who doesn't hate this kind of job? A real company who value the life of their employees will never assign a 24-hour job to their employees, if they cherish their employee as real human with families.

Of course, it will be different if you are running your own company, you have no choice but to ensure it becomes a successful business, even if it takes 25 hours a day. Working for others and being available 24/7, the company better be paying very good for all the sacrifice an employee has to make.

Lots of companies uses "we have a lot of knowledge and training" as a reason for people to stay. This is totally "BS". Sorry to put it in such a blunt way, but really, go and ask all the people who started their own business or working for themselves, where do they learn more- when they are working for themselves or when they are working for others?

I am not saying you cannot learn from the company you are working in, but to compare the learning curve between starting out on your own and working for others, it's heaven and earth.

Of course, resigning is not a way to solve the problem, but if it's going to get you closer to the ideal career you are looking for, I don't see why not?

Let me tell you simple experiences I've been through in my working life. My first job, I was there for 5 years. Getting little pay as a graduate. Starting pay RM1000. Can you believe it? I told myself doesn't matter just go in and gain as much as I can. Then I noticed that its a 24hours on call job. No extra payment for the on call job. Start to tell myself to think of resigning. But if I resign will I know the next job I got need not to do such 24hours on call also? Got the answer for myself and therefore I took up the challenge and go through it. Just to tell myself that take this as a base for my future. Until I left the company my salary is just RM2000. But I gained a lot of skills and knowldge and experiences in which if I pay RM2000 I will not get it.

Now that I had a better career in hand. This is not what I gain in 1 day. Its what I gained through all teh hardworks that I pour out without counting on how much I gave the company or how much teh company pay me. Of course that will matters as everyone looking at the salary. But there are other things that you might need to look into. As your case having a good partner is not something which is very easy to get in life. Even in love life, getting a good partner is not easy. For me, I've been through things that are impossible to possible. Things which need miracle. All these I have been through. As what you have found a "good partner", I did have a "good partner" as well. And therefore I told myself when ever I am thinking of resigning, "I have actually gain". And everytime facing difficulties I will tell myself that "I am not alone" and "I have come so far, just push a bit more". All these are what I've gained from all the hard times.

Today, being able to advise you that resigning will not solve any problem. I am actaully proud that you can list out the pros and cons of deciding whether to resign or not to. Try to think back the road you've been through to reach this point. Is what you gained more than what you gave? Ask yourself this question. I cannot make up a decsion for you. But I can advise and tell you from the point of my view.

Again, good luck to you.

Thanks for the advice.

I also want to try work in a company for 5 years. I hope I can, but I think is not easy for me .

I very surprise when I ask my Project Manager how old she had been working here. Her answer was: "5 years, almost 6 years".

Need to learn from her how to do that.

Well its not easy to stay in the company for years. As I've been through also it really needs your patience to do so. To stay in a company for long is not really an easy thing. Try to talk to people and get more advise. Patience is the key to succeed.

Once again, good luck.

Excellent advice Stevie, that's actually higher than how much I am working for when I graduated. And lightning did strike.

In this fast moving world, employees are also FMCGs. I think your take on "as long as you have a good partner in your work" = you should stay in the company and be happy about it really is very mind boggling for me.

It seems like Stevie is somewhat related to the company where Fabio is working, and it's not actually difficult to find this blog myself. I just believe the duration of your stay in company is measured as your "uncompetitiveness" in the industry and you are just to comfortable doing the same shit everyday.

Well, I am just coming from a different point of view here. I just can't understand why people would want to stay in a shit hole long enough to wait and let the shit hit the fan before finding out it's time to bail (no offence to anyone who is working for others...but really, people who'd woke up and realized that usually tell themselves to be smarter next time and I love this quote from my friend- "no matter who you are working for, always remember to work for yourself!)

Anyway, wake up and smell the rose- job security is a myth, and like how Beyonce puts it- "Don't ever get to thinking that you're irreplaceable!"

resign man. no need to think too much. 24 hour on call, u better make sure ur company pay u much enough to cover ur sacrifice on something more important than a multi billion project u do for ur company. The something are ur frens, family, time & ur health esspecially.

challange are everywhere. but 24 on call is not what i call challange, i call it suffer. Unless u are a loser without frens & family to care of, then u can work at midnight everyday as well. but i think u got frens & family that hoping u to stay & rest well at home with peace of mind every night. they wish that during CNY u can stay with them during your holiday. They are most certain to wish that u are healthy too.

i agree with "Guest" (put ur name lar brother). when u are not irreplaceable, companies are not un-leavaable as well. many great opportunities outside esspecially in KL(although there are lots of crappy one oso), don sacrifice a jungle bcoz of one tree.

resign is not certain to solve ur problem but if u don, it sure wont solve ur problem coz if u leave, u have a chance to get a better one, u stay, u are certain to get a crappy one. think wise bro...

oh ya, i oso think that stevie is someone from ur company as well... hahahahaha...

I still dunno who is stevie yet, but I do know who is Guest

Haha...sorry Fabio, once a guest always a guest eh?

When working for others, always use this formula to gauge how much you are worth, or from the company's point of view, how much you cost to be replaced by another person:

t x q

where t equals to the time you are working, and "q" equals to the how much you are worth per hour. In short, you are trading your hours for money. The better your quality is the higher your "q".

However, if you are working for a close friend, who is also the owner of the company, you can use this formula:

t x q x o

where "o" is the opportunity where you can get into a senior position in the company much faster using some "networking" skills (hint: not Oracle, not CISCO) and to eventually end up with some equity of the company

If you own the business yourself, consider this formula to evaluate how much you are worth:

t x q x o x p

where "p" equals to the amount of hardwork, preserverance, determination and patience you put into the business.

In this case, "q", "o" and "p" becomes very critical since "t" is somewhat limited to "24" unless you begin to hire more people but you will wish to have more than 24 hours anyhow, "q" varies according to the service you provide and the market you serve and this value will be changing from time to time, "o" is the opportunity you grabbed along the way such as big contracts or a niche market. "p" is a new element in the formula where it you determine yourself how much you are really should be worth.

nskoon83, I'm sorry to keep you in suspense, anyway, keep guessing!

Is ok, I dun mind anybody posting as a Guest. (I actually know who is Guest since I am the programmer of this website)

Seem like every time my post title with "Resign" keyword will get a lot of comments. Seem like "Resign" has become Malaysian behavior.

Anyway, I will see the situation to make decision since this whole Chinese New Year week I didn't received any call also (Actually the server went down on 18/2/2007, 年初一, thanks Project Manager didn't call me). Any job near LRT do invite me .
